Making and weaving Malawi Benches is a long labour intensive process  which takes months of planning.

The Tiliaceae shrub is used as jute for the weaving of the benches. The shrub grows in the summer months and the long roots are harvested, coiled and dried.

In the winter months there is no material available to weave these benches, therefore weaving is limited to about 8 months of the year.

Reed from the river is also incorporated into the manufacturing process.

These benches are extremely hard wearing and strong. If they get damp drying quickly is essential, as it is an organic product and must not stay damp for long periods, as mould can settle.
